As a source of information on music highly influential to the black/death metal genres, Encyclopedia is a fine little nod of the head to those oh-so important bands from yesteryear: Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate. However, Bewitched's faithful and dedicated covers of these songs are about as compulsory as the CBS sitcom lineup for 1999. Sure, they utilize all the elements quite well: blazing guitars, thrash rhythm and snarly raspy growly vocals. Unfortunately, this sort of grovelling at the throne of the past is pretty useless overall. I've heard Bewitched originals here and there and I honestly would rather hear the band take these influences to create something fresh and invigorating. Does the world need yet another tribute album? If you want the real encyclopedia of naughtiness, I would suggest digging up the old Bathory and Celtic Frost albums instead.
