What an utterly dull and fully pointless album. Carpe Tenebrum is Astennu from Dimmu Borgir's "side project" with Nagash from Dimmu Borgir/Covenant handling the vocal duties and frankly, I just haven't a clue why Astennu would spend the time to write or record something so uninteresting. Regardless of whether or not you can stomach Covenant, at least Nagash's side project was a change of pace entirely. All Carpe Tenebrum pulls off is a blitzcore of boring run of the mill black metal, lacking fury and inspiration. All eight tracks, occasionally interpaced with really bad distorted voices, zip by like itty-bitty mosquitos with the bite of a toothless old dog. I think Mirrored Hate Painting points out the limitations of higher speed black metal. Playing fast is irrelevant if you lack the ability to come up with riffs that devastate rather than just remind listeners that a thousand better bands exist and dammit, probably should have gotten one of those. Carpe Tenebrum is Dimmu Borgir without atmosphere or inspiration. Astennu would be best advised to stick to his role in Dimmu Borgir or at the very least try something not so overdone in the black metal scene.
