At the first sound of college/alt-rock guitars in the opening song "Shady", I was all set to hurl this disc over yonder mountaintop and put the Review Guns on Kill. But by the second track things started to improve and the disc turned out to be A-OK in the long run. Cry inhabits a region that is borded by Mazzy Star on one side and perhaps latter day Frank Black on the other. Definitely college rock geography, but tempered with a bit more emotion and melancholy sketches than a lot of the schlock that tittilates the 18-24 demographics market. Much of the material is gentle, somewhat spaced out in terms of echo. Fortunately, that production value adds greatly to the isolation that the singer apparently feels. His vocals border on whiny, but do not cross that line except in rare parts. Instead, he just sounds fairly bummed out throughout. In the end, this disc represents radio friendly rock that is considerably better than most shoegazer music.
