This band has created quite a buzz in the indie-rock community (or at least the one in Philadelphia) as of late, so I decided to check out one of their shows recently to see what all the hype was all about. Well, I was floored. Slow, moody, haunting, female-fronted rock is the name of the game here. It's very, very hard to believe that this is frontwoman Maura Davis' (the brother of Engine Down's Keeley Davis, who is also in the band) very first band (and these songs are the first she'd ever written), as the five songs presented here are all very well-written and powerful, not to mention extremely haunting and moody. This band is often compared to Portishead, and I can understand that comparison, as both bands evoke the same type of mood and Maura's vocals are quite similar to Beth's at times. However, these guys are much less electronic-based than Portishead is. They use live drums and they are also much more guitar-oriented. Anyway, I'm rambling too much. I'll just say that this is definitely one of my favorite new bands, and I can't fucking wait for their full-length (due out in April on Jade Tree).
