Although recorded originally in late 1997 and early 1998, Eventide of the Orb and Heavens hasn't received a US release until X Rated Records finally put it out this year. Desolate, a Bulgarian band, has a lot of similarities to early Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, offering a melodic death metal attack that appears to be firmly rooted in the Swedish scene. The music is speedy, oriented around high end guitar lines and fairly well structured with the occasional quiet passage thrown in to keep things from getting too monotonous. The band is reasonably accomplished at coming with interesting leads and songs. But I admit I'm hedging quite a bit because while well performed, there isn't a lot about Desolate that demands they be included in the upper echelon of bands who perform this style. Competency is fine in music, but what Desolate does requires more than just an adequate ability. This is the kind of album that ends up being recommended only to those who cannot get enough saturation in a particular style. Yes, those who live, breathe and eat Swedish styled melodic death metal will probably get a real kick out of this album and there are certainly worse. However, the basic end result is that Desolate is left out in the cold for those who aren't quite so fanatical. Decent work but I sincerely hope future releases from this obviously talented band have more of a punch to them.
