You probably didn't see it in the brochures for that weekend in Mexico, but this country has actually got a thriving metal scene going on. Though not as noticeable as say, Norway, the bands emerging from Mexico are noteworthy of worldwide attention. Case in point: Dies Irae. Incorporating elements of doom, hints of black metal and even some flamenco guitar picking (the opening instrumental "Aeri Somnia" shows these boys have some serious talent at guitar), Dies Irae is aflame with hope and promise of being a band to watch out for in the years to come. Occasionally reminding me of the style that Opeth and Katatonia play, as well as touches of the Swedish death metal scene, Dies Irae succeed in their moody brand of metal. There are moments of cringe with the clean vocals: "Etherial" contains some very annoying off-key attempts at brooding melancholy. Best they either find a vocalist capable of strong clean singing or work with the harsh screaming that is reminiscient of Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt. The lengthy songs travel through many avenues of emotion, well-crafted and strong. Hopefully this band will capture the attention of the crowd that already worships Opeth as they are talented enough to become a monster of the genre.
