Gardenian is a relatively standard NWOSDM band in the vein of In Flames, which shouldn't surprise anybody considering the label they're on. Their connection to In Flames is more than their label, though, as the main man behind Gardenian was a touring guitarist for In Flames for a spell.

The music is fairly standard, with more than decent production, some growled vocals and a good deal of clean, melodic singing. Some of the songs actually have really catchy hooks ("Long snap to zero"). While the rhythm guitars are good, one often wishes they had a different lead guitarist, as the leads are not up to snuff most of the time, and the use of the evil wah-wah pedal tends to spoil things (for me at least).

While I would never be caught listening to In Flames myself, I predict that this little CD will spend a good deal of time in my CD player. Not that the music is groundbreaking, by any stretch of the imagination, but the melodic vocals and riffs are actually endearing and pleasant. Let's hope they ditch the growls altogether, polish up their vocal and lead guitar technique, and we might have a winner.
