Shadeworks is a Belgian outfit that specializes in a slighty gothic, somewhat progressive metal sound. This four song demo EP aptly shows what they are currently capable of and a bit of potential for future releases. Each of the four songs works on capturing a dark mood, with both low male vocals and light female vocals. The guitars tend to lean towards a modern doom approach while keyboards provide the backdrop. On the whole, the guitar playing is quite good with some solid rhythms and appropriate, tasteful leads to enhance the songwriting. The production, meanwhile, is unfortunately somewhat subdued, leading one to wonder what this band would sound like if given the chance to cut loose. As it stands, Sooty Limbs is good but understated and bubbling just beneath the surface. Despite the slight loss of energy due to the production (and hey, these guys are still in their early stages, so it's not unexpected or a huge knock against them), Shadeworks offers enough here to warrant more interest as they develop in the future. Fans of the Napalm Records' roster of male/female gothy metal bands should definitely take interest here as Shadeworks falls into that category without resorting to large breasted women on the cover.
